New tender process for North – South air link

The Welsh Assembly Government recently announced that there is to be a new tender process to provide an air link between north and south Wales.

The service between Cardiff and Anglesey began in May 2007 and to date has attracted more than 37,000 passengers. The current contract with Highland Airways comes to an end this coming May.

Making the announcement, Deputy First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones said,

This service provides an essential link between North and South Wales and the Welsh Assembly Government are determined to keep it running. It has been a huge success, far exceeding our expectations with 37,000 passengers using it since it started.

The current contract comes to an end this May and we recently re-tendered the service. Unfortunately the tender process was not successful and we did not receive any bids that complied with the requirements of this particular tender.

Our number one objective is to make sure there is no break in this vital service. We are currently considering the options to deliver the service on a short-term basis from the end of May, with a view to starting a new tender process to appoint a suitable airline for a longer-term contract.
