‘Spring Clean’ grant scheme for places of worship in Wales

Cadw, the Welsh Assembly Government’s historic environment division has announced that for the second year it will be operating its small grants scheme which will help towards maintenance costs of places of worship in Wales which are listed.

Responsibility for the maintenance and upkeep of places of worship lies with individual denominations.  However, Cadw can assist with its small grants scheme  - the ‘Spring Clean’ grants scheme - which offers assistance for the maintenance of listed places of worship in Wales.

A grant of a maximum of £500 per building is available for a range of minor repairs – for example, cleaning rain water gutters and downpipes or securing slipped roof slates - which are necessary to keep places of worship in good order.

Applications will be accepted from 1 March 2009 for a period of six months, or when the budget is exhausted.  The budget for 2009-10 is £100,000.  Grant must be claimed by 31 December 2009.

All listed places of worship in Wales are eligible.  Grant will be paid for maintenance works to the place of worship and any buildings physically attached to it – such as schoolrooms or vestries – but not for other associated buildings, such as church halls or lychgates.

Heritage Minister, Alun Ffred Jones, said:

I am delighted that the Assembly Government is again able to offer this grants scheme  given its success in 2008-09.  It is often the time spent on the upkeep of our historic buildings that saves them from falling into sorry disrepair and I’m delighted that we can help with what can often be a thankless task.

In these difficult economic times any financial assistance should be embraced. I would urge anyone responsible for the maintenance of a place of worship to find out more about the grants available.
