Permanent Representatives Committee reaches agreement on financial support of external borders and visas

The Permanent Representatives Committee (COREPER II) on November 27 in Brussels has approved the agreement reached with the European Parliament on the Regulation setting provisions for the Internal Security Fund instrument for the financial support of external borders and visa policy.

“This is a very important financing programme for the next seven years. We have now paved way for the final adoption of the Regulation which will ensure financing of the actions of external border management and visa policies,” said chair of the COREPER ambassador Raimundas Karoblis.

The compromise agreement was reached with the EP and endorsed by the COREPER. The general objective of the this financial instrument is to contribute to strengthening national and European capabilities in the areas of border control, visa policy and the management of migration flows, and to provide a platform for the development of common information systems underpinning these policies.

The European Commission proposed the Regulation in November 2011. This is the first of four Home Affairs financing instruments of the EU multiannual budget for 2014–2020 agreed with the EP. The Lithuanian Presidency aims to conclude the negotiations on the remaining regulations with the EP as soon as possible.
