Youth Action: a new opportunity from Global Xchange

Global Xchange - a partnership programme managed by the British Council and VSO - has launched a new overseas volunteering opportunity for residents aged 18-22 to get involved in fighting poverty. Global Xchange Youth Action gives young people the chance to spend 3 life-changing months in Africa or Asia , as part of the UK Government’s International Citizen Service scheme. First places start in July 2011.

Youth Action volunteers will work in one of 12 countries across Africa and Asia . In a team, they'll join forces with young people from the area, and work with organisations who have asked for their help. Volunteers' efforts are focused on the issues that matter, like how to reduce the impact of HIV or how to create opportunities for young people in poorer countries. Volunteers will develop their communication, team-working and leadership skills, and gain CV-boosting recognition for taking part.

Volunteers don't need any specific qualifications or experience - just the passion and commitment to get involved. Young people from all backgrounds and sections of the community are encouraged to apply.

If they can afford to, volunteers will be asked to fundraise a contribution towards costs. If not, they'll be fully funded to take part. In every case, the support provided is second-to-none. Accommodation, a volunteer allowance, food, flights, visas, travel and medical insurance, medication and vaccines are all provided. Volunteers are trained before they go, while overseas, and on their return home. Two Youth Action supervisors support each team, helping them achieve all they can.

VSO are keen to tell as many young people as possible about this exciting new opportunity while places are available. Please help spread the word.
