The Innovation Code in Action

A combination of emerging industries and changing work environments along with waiting for a qualification to develop in a new field, can mean individuals have to wait several months or even a year to be able to gain the skills they need to progress or move into employment. However, an independent training provider, PBTS Ltd based in the south east, demonstrates how they have overcome these challenges by using the Innovation Code including helping unemployed learners to move into work.

PBTS Ltd, which provides specialist training for the Healthcare Science Sector, welcomed the Code to address a competency gap they had recognised within the Agenda for Change Department for Health framework.

By delivering new provision through the Innovation code, PBTS have enabled employers to develop their staff. They have also been able to use the course to support unemployed learners to progress – with all learners who were unemployed at the start of the course moving into either employment in the sector, or further education. One cohort of learners has already completed a course funded through the Innovation Code, with a second cohort due to start in January. Over 60 NHS trusts have shown interest in the proposed qualification. Through PBTS working with the Hammersmith Group of Hospitals, hospitals across London are actively gaining interest as well as The Association of Biomedical Healthcare Sciences and the Academy for Healthcare Science.

Kim Thorneywork said: "It is too early to tell the full impact that the Code will have on adult education. However, the Code is gathering momentum and PBTS has proved how the code has worked for them and the benefits it can bring to others."

Dr Lydia Taiwo of PBTS Ltd added "We are delighted that we have been able to use the Innovation Code to deliver this new provision.

"It has allowed us the flexibility to respond to employers needs quickly whilst also ensuring that learners benefit from having the course available now."
