Commenting on changes to the social security system announced yesterday (Thursday) by the government, including the removal of Job Grants, In Work credits and Return to Work credits, TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said:

'Removing this vital support for low income workers makes a mockery of the claim that no one will lose out under the new Universal Credit system.

'Making people poorer is a mean and counterproductive way to meet the government's promise that Universal Credit will lead to no cash losers when it starts next year.

'These important payments are designed to smooth the transition to work for lone parents and disabled people, who were previously long-term unemployed, by helping them with one off costs such as appropriate work clothing or equipment.

'Taking this help away, with no promise of a replacement, will make it even harder for those struggling to find work.'
