Victory in Europe Day, known as VE Day, commemorates the date when the Allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany.
The First Minister said:
"Everyone across Wales will be united in their respect for those who fought so valiantly to secure the freedoms we all enjoy today.
"When Victory in Europe was declared on May the 8th 1945 many of our armed forces were still fighting in other parts of the world, but the surrender was a major boost to the morale of the nation.
"On that day the prospect of an end to a conflict that had claimed so many lives seemed closer. VE Day was the beginning of the end and we all owe a debt of gratitude to the many men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Second World War."
