Advice and guidance, not prescription and policing, key to success in a digital world

ICT managers in local public services need to develop their skills and understanding if they want to operate effectively in the emerging digital world.

In ICT skills in a digital world: need for change? its latest briefing, Socitm says senior and middle ICT managers looking to thrive in tomorrow's digital organisations will need to develop their ability to relate with other managers and ensure delivery of ICT that is responsive to their needs.

The new briefing brings together thoughts and findings from a series of

workshops and roundtables that Socitm has been running with ICT practitioners across the UK.

The workshops studied SFIA - the internationally recognised framework of generic and professional skills required in ICT functions - and considered whether these remain relevant to digital organisations. Workshop delegates also reviewed the skills for the future already identified in Socitm's ICT strategy framework Planting the flag.

'In an increasingly complex environment, where ICT is challenged to provide 'anywhere, any time, any device' support, the softer skills of effective communication, business awareness and customer care are important at every level and in every part of the ICT team' says Mary Wintershausen, author of ICT skills in a digital world: need for change?. 'ICT professionals must support colleagues familiar with using technology in a personal context within the work environment, enabling them to work with corporate guidelines and regulations, and not just telling them 'no'.
