Help for employers on new curriculum

Scottish employers are being given information about what Curriculum for Excellence means for them in a brochure and website launched by Education Secretary Michael Russell today.

Mr Russell launched the resources during a visit to the I-Sea project at the Scottish Maritime Museum, which saw second year pupils in English, Technical, Art and Home Economics work with a local regeneration company and museum to put on an exhibition about the sea.

The business-focused brochure and website are designed to help employers understand the benefits of engaging with young people through Curriculum for Excellence and encourage them to get involved.

Mr Russell said:

"Curriculum for Excellence is giving our young people the skills they need for learning, life and work. Involving employers in education can bring real inspiration and relevance to young people and help make sure they have the motivation, skills and drive to create a more dynamic and prosperous Scotland.

"That's why I am launching this brochure and website to make sure employers have a dedicated resource to help them engage with young people, explain what the new curriculum means for them, how it will benefit them and answer the questions we know they may have about this new skills focused method of teaching.

"There are great examples, such as the I-Sea project in Irvine that I've visited today, that show how many employers are already working with local schools to enrich education. I believe Curriculum for Excellence offers a fantastic opportunity for employers and I hope these new resources will encourage them to get involved."

The website and brochure contain information on Curriculum for Excellence and what it means for employers based on insight research with employers and comments from employer's organisations.

The Scottish Government's innovative Engage for Education site allows users to read blogs from Ministers, post comments and get involved in workshops on issues relating to education
