The April edition of FSA e-News highlights how the Agency is making it easier than ever to eat safely and eat well in the immediate future, during the Olympics and in the longer term.
With 88 days to go until the start of London 2012, food businesses in the Olympic areas are already ahead of the game in terms of food safety.
The Agency’s Play it Safe campaign, which aims to ensure the safety of the food bought, cooked and eaten during London 2012, kicked off recently with a high profile launch. Stakeholders are being encouraged to spread the campaign messages, and a toolkit and newsletter have been made available to explain how they can get involved.
A month before the Olympics, from 11 to 17 June, Food Safety Week will be focusing on the fact that ‘your fridge is your friend’. Key messages will explain how people can make the best use of their fridge to keep food safe while reducing food waste. Various support materials will be available, including leaflets, posters and a communications toolkit for stakeholders.
Looking to the longer term, the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme is going from strength to strength. The scheme now covers about 75% of local authorities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and by the time of the Games, should rise to about 94%.
In Northern Ireland, a six-month pilot scheme, Caloriewise, will help consumers make more informed choices when eating out. Local food businesses will display calorie information on menus for the first time. The scheme runs from 1 May to 31 October 2012.
