Police Warn Underage Drinkers on Use of Fake ID

Over recent weeks NPT teams covering the Queensbury, Clayton, Thornton and Allerton areas have carried out 26 test purchase operations and issued nine on the spot £80 fixed penalty notices to those off licences that were willing to sell alcohol to the underage.

During these operations the NPT team became aware of a growing number of young people using fake ID - that had been bought via internet sites - and are now taking measures to tackle the issue.

Inspector Paul Hepworth of Bradford North NPT said: "We want to let people using fake ID know that we are taking steps to tackle this and it will soon be much harder for people to get served with a fake ID. We will be issuing off licenses with packs that clearly explain which sorts of ID are legitimate and should be accepted and which types of ID are fake and should be refused. We will also be reminding the owners of off licenses of the action we will take should they serve the underage."

"The misuse of alcohol by the under-18s contributes to a lot of the anti-social behaviour that we have to deal with and we take very seriously the issues of off-licenses serving the under age and the under age using fake ID's to get alcohol. We would like to reiterate that offenders here face fixed penalty notices as well as having any alcohol and fake ID's confiscated by the police."

The packs that are being given to off-licenses will not just say which forms of ID are legitimate and which aren't. They will also contain forms for people to apply for a CitizenCard. CitizenCards are available to anyone of any age for the purposes of proving age or identity. For more information visit www.citizencard.com.
