The danger of public bad, mutual OK, private good

Adopting a public bad, mutual okay, private good approach in government is a dangerous path said Andrew Adonis at the Public Sector Expo Conference this week.

The director of the Institute for Government said:

"In Whitehall there has been a phony war for two years around the cuts agenda.

"Year one was the year before the election - political parties were setting out big figures, cuts and numbers that no one could fully understand the impact of at that time.

"Year two those figures were turned in to cuts for departments and functions. It was not fair shares all around .......Across the public sector we are looking at cuts of about a third - even Thatcher didn't achieve more than 10% reductions.

"Next month the realisation will dawn. There are five points I want to make about the cuts ......."
