Recorded Crime in Scotland, 2009-10

Scotland's Chief Statistician today published Recorded Crime in Scotland, 2009-10. The publication presents statistics on crimes and offences recorded and cleared up by the eight Scottish police forces in 2009-10.

The figures show that the total number of crimes recorded by the police decreased by 10 per cent between 2008-09 and 2009-10. In 2009-10, the Scottish police recorded 338,028 crimes.

The main findings are:

  • The number of violent crimes (non-sexual crimes of violence) recorded by the police decreased by 11 per cent between 2008-09 and 2009-10, to a total of 11.201.
  • The number of sexual crimes (crimes of indecency) increased by two per cent, from 6,331 in 2008-09 to 6,458 in 2009-10.
  • Within the indecency group, recorded cases of rape and attempted rape increased by three per cent to 996.
  • The number of crimes of dishonesty decreased by nine per cent to stand at 153,256 cases in 2009-10.
  • Recorded cases of vandalism (including fire-raising and malicious mischief) decreased by 15 per cent to total 93,443 in 2009-10.
  • Other recorded crimes (including drug offences, crimes against public justice and offensive weapons offences) decreased by nine per cent to total 73,670 in 2009-10.
  • The clear-up rate for all recorded crimes in 2009-10 was 49 per cent, which is the same as in 2008-09.
  • The clear-up rate in 2009-10 for non-sexual crimes of violence was higher than in 2008-09, increasing from 64 per cent to 67 per cent. The rate for crimes of indecency has decreased by two percentage points to 66 per cent, the rate for crimes of dishonesty has decreased by one percentage point and the rates for fire-raising, vandalism etc and for miscellaneous offences have increased by one percentage point each. The rate for the other crimes group is unchanged from the previous year.
  • In 2009-10 the police recorded 563,735 offences, an increase of one per cent from the number in 2008-09.
