BHF - Welsh decision not to relax smoking ban a class act

Unnecessary proposals to allow actors to smoke on film and TV sets in Wales have been dropped.

Ministers said recently that the Welsh Government would not push ahead with plans to relax the smoking ban. Film and TV companies had wanted an exemption for creative reasons but Health Minister Mark Drakeford said in a written statement that he had “reviewed the evidence” and was not going to proceed with the proposals.

Joseph Clift, BHF's Policy Manager, said: “The Welsh Government’s decision not to relax the smoking ban is a class act and means workers across Wales will remain protected from the dangers of second-hand smoke.

“Unpicking the ban would have set a dangerous, unnecessary precedent but the decision taken here has hopefully brought the curtain down on that threat, once and for all.”

Tobacco remains the leading cause of preventable premature death and 25,000 deaths from heart and circulatory disease each year are as a result of smoking.
