Cash boost for Brighton carnival and hip hop fans

It’s going to be a fantastic summer for carnival lovers and hip hop fans thanks to two new grants from Arts Council England, South East, announced this week.

Rising Styles - previously known as Brighton Hip Hop Festival - are set to receive a £25,000 windfall and Brighton Carnival are celebrating the news of a £40,700 cash boost. Both awards mean the Brighton-based arts organisations will be bringing the city streets to life with a buzz of sound, colour and energy this July.

Rebecca Ball, Head of Combined Arts at Arts Council England, South East said: ‘This is great news for the city. Rising Styles has really grown in reputation over the past few years and alongside the Carnival, and of course the Brighton Festival, cements the city’s reputation as a hotspot for popular arts events. We are delighted to support such a exciting range and hope there will be something for everyone.’

Hannah Barker, from Brighton Carnival, is looking forward to creating even more spectacular displays for Brightonians on July 13 this year: ‘Thanks to the Arts Council we can continue to build on our successes from 2007. We will be bringing top quality carnival artists to Brighton to help grow our local carnival talent, and help Brighton have a spectacular display of world class carnival arts. We are still looking for more community groups to get on board and get involved, so get in touch if you want to join the fun!’

Indy Hunjan, is the Director of Kala Phool which develops and manages Rising Styles: ‘We’re really happy that the Arts Council is supporting us because it’s recognition of the significance of Kala Phool’s Rising Styles Festival as the UK’s largest celebration of hip hop culture. This year’s festival from 5-13 July is bigger and better than ever, with visual and public art events, live performances, industry events, battlejams and culminating in a fantastic outdoor block party. • Taking part in the Arts

  • Children and young people

  • The creative economy

  • Vibrant communities

  • Internationalism

  • Celebrating diversity
