New eye health web sections

Diabetes UK has revamped its eye health web content to provide even more information at the click of a mouse

Two new sections, 'Eyes (Retinopathy)' and 'Monitoring your eyes', cover all aspects of eye health from explaining retinal screening, what retinopathy is, the causes and treatment of the condition, and a page answering frequently asked questions.

Retinopathy affects the blood vessels supplying the retina – the seeing part of the eye. People with diabetes are 10 to 20 times more likely to go blind than people without the condition.

Leading cause of blindness
Zoe Harrison, Clinical Advisor, said, "Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness in the 's working-age population. Blindness can be prevented in 90 per cent of cases if retinopathy is identified early and appropriate treatment applied. Therefore, it’s vital that we provide people with all the necessary information to help them reduce their risk of this devastating complication or, if they already have some form of retinopathy, to guide them through available treatment."

People with diabetes are entitled to a free digital eye test to detect retinopathy every year. For more information please speak to your healthcare professional.

The new eye health web sections are kindly sponsored by Novartis Pharmaceuticals UK Limited
