New 2050 simulation puts the UK's energy future in your hands

How would you reduce carbon emissions by 80% while still meeting the UK's energy needs? Thanks to a new online simulation, you can now make those decisions.

Build more power stations, convert all cars to electric or hydrogen power – it's up to you.

T
he UK has a target of reducing carbon emissions by 80 per cent by 2050.

If it was up to you, how would you achieve that target while still meeting the UK’s energy needs?

Would you:

  • build 50 new nuclear power stations?
  • build 20,000 onshore wind turbines?
  • reduce average home temperatures by 1.5 degrees Celsius through smarter heating?
  • convert all cars to electric or hydrogen power?
  • put additional insulation on almost every home?

The new My2050 online simulation lets you put your ideas to the test. And compare your ideas to celebrities such as musician Fyfe Dangerfield and Olympic Swimmer Duncan Goodhew.

Energy and Climate Change Secretary Chris Huhne said: "There’s no silver bullet solution to the UK’s energy future. This project is all about getting to grips with the hard choices and  trade-offs which need to be made, choices which will affect our homes, communities and the way we travel.

"We can’t afford to leave it till tomorrow - so get involved today."
