Moving along route to safer cycling

Making walking and cycling safer and easier in Wales has taken another step forward recently as Assembly Members have their first opportunity to make amendments to the Active Travel (Wales) Bill during the Enterprise and Business Committee.

The Bill, which is a key Programme for Government Commitment, will make it a legal requirement for local authorities to plan fully integrated networks of cycle routes and footways that make it easier for pedestrians and cyclists to make everyday journeys. Wales is the first country in the UK to introduce such a Bill that will see the development of key sites such as hospitals, schools and shopping areas connected with walking and cycling lanes.

Speaking before the Committee met to debate the Bill, the Minister for Culture and Sport, John Griffiths, said:

"The main aim of this legislation is to make both cycling and walking safer, easier and more desirable for people in Wales.

"We want to see walking and cycling the most natural and normal way of making everyday journeys.  The truth is that we will only get more people to cycle to work, to school or the shops if they feel it’s a safe and appealing form of transport. This Bill will play a key role in achieving our ambitious aim of changing people’s attitude towards walking and cycling.

"In addition to the obvious health benefits of walking and cycling, this Bill will also have a positive impact on reducing congestion in our towns and cities and decreasing our greenhouse gas emissions."
