Reserve forces in the NHS

NHS employees who also serve in the armed forces are set to benefit from increased support

NHSScotland employs a number of staff in the Reserve Forces who may be mobilised to serve their country in areas of conflict.

The new policy will set out arrangements for mobilisation and support for Reservists on return to work. Paid leave of two weeks per year will now be available to Reservists to attend annual camp or continuous training.

Additional unpaid leave or annual leave from the employee's normal annual allocation of up to three days may also be granted for short periods of training.

Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said that returning to work after a challenging period in deployment may be a difficult time. This policy aids in providing a supportive and positive work environment and will help ensure a smooth re-integration into the workplace

Ms Sturgeon said:

"The Scottish Government and the NHS in Scotland is committed to supporting staffing in the Reserve Forces and that is why this policy has been developed to support both employee and employer.

"Modern and effective medical support is a fundamental part of Britain's military capabilities. The UK's Armed Forces must have the best clinical support to be able to mount and sustain operations overseas, where necessary.

"Scotland has a long and proud military history and the Scottish Government fully recognises the courage and the sacrifice of our Armed Forces and is committed to improving the lives of the men and women who are serving their country."
