NHS Confederation statement on NCEPOD report 'Knowing the Risk'

NHS Confederation deputy chief executive David Stout says NHS leaders need to give proper consideration to how they can best implement the report's recommendations.

NHS Confederation deputy chief executive David Stout, said:

"This is a well-researched report and NHS leaders need to give proper consideration to how they can best implement its recommendations.

"If NHS organisations are to bring about real change to the care high risk patients receive then we need all parts of the health service - managers, surgeons and emergency services - working together to make sure surgical care is properly planned. We know many hospitals need to do much more to ensure they provide a round-the-clock service for patients.

"However, bringing about improvements in high-risk surgery many also require some radical changes to the way services are planned. In some cases, it will mean concentrating services on fewer sites to make the best use of staff skills, critical care bed capacity and pre and post-operative care.

"This not only means better outcomes for patients, but lower healthcare costs for hospitals"
