Three events to open Welsh Coast Path

Environment Minister, John Griffiths, has announced that three events will open the 870 mile / 1,400km Wales Coast Path on Saturday 5 May (a Bank Holiday weekend).

Celebratory opening events will be held at Flint Castle in North Wales, Aberystwyth Promenade, Ceredigion in Mid Wales and South Wales’ event will be at Roald Dahl Plass, Cardiff Bay. Detailed arrangements for the events will be announced soon.

These events will reflect the importance of the Wales Coast Path and showcase sections of the Path, local heritage and points of interest. All events will highlight the health, economic and social benefits associated with improved countryside access.

The Minster said:

“The opening of the Path will be an exciting day for Wales. We will become the first country in the world to have a formal trail the whole way around our coast.

“The Path opens just before the world's eyes will be on the UK for the Olympics. We hope many of the extra visitors coming to London for the Games will take time to visit Wales and its coast.

"Since this project began in 2007 we have created over 130 miles of new path and improved more than 330 miles of existing pathway. When open, the Path will provide a real boost to local economies around Wales' coastline.”

Ramblers Cymru are organising the Big Welsh Coastal Walk, to celebrate the official opening of the Wales Coast Path. The Big Welsh Coastal Walk will be a series of led walks along the Coast Path over its opening weekend. The aim is to get as many people as possible walking around the coast of Wales in the largest mass participation event Wales has ever seen.

The Wales Coast Path has been developed by the Welsh Government in partnership with the Countryside Council for Wales, 16 local authorities and two National Parks.

In addition to funding from the Welsh Government and coastal local authorities of approximately £2 million per year, the European Regional Development fund has allocated nearly £4 million over four years in support of the project.

Completing the Wales Coast Path is a Programme for Government key action for creating sustainable places for people in Wales.
