The King’s Fund attracts key figures to new roles in policy, leadership, and clinical engagement

Key leaders in health policy and management are joining The King’s Fund as Senior Fellows.

These include

  • Nicholas Timmins, currently Public Policy Editor at the Financial Times, who will lead on a project using the NHS reforms as a case study of policy-making in coalition government. This will be undertaken jointly between The King’s Fund and the Institute for Government, and will report in 2012.
  • Nigel Edwards, former Acting Chief Executive of the NHS Confederation, who will be working on ways to combine policy and leadership development expertise to support the changing NHS, in a unique appointment across the Fund’s Policy and Leadership directorates.
  • John Clark, Director of Medical Leadership and International Relations at the NHS Institute, who will work on strategies to enhance medical and clinical engagement in the NHS, building on his international research and consultancy on doctors’ leadership.

Other leading lights coming to The King’s Fund include former Chief Medical Officer Professor Sir Liam Donaldson as a Visiting Senior Fellow in Policy. Dr Al Mulley from Dartmouth College and Prof Richard Bohmer from Harvard Business School have been appointed as Visiting International Fellows from the United States. Claire Perry, Dr Angela Coulter and Professor Rudolf Klein have also been appointed as Visiting Senior Fellows.

  • Nicholas Timmins will work part-time at The King’s Fund on a range of policy projects, initially leading a joint piece of work with the Institute for Government using the NHS reforms as a case study of policy making in coalition government. He will also join the Institute for Government as a part-time Senior Fellow and remain part-time as a journalist at the Financial Times.   • Nigel Edwards is the former Acting Chief Executive and Head of Policy at the NHS Confederation and an Honorary Visiting Professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Previously, he was a senior manager in the NHS.
  • John Clark is the inaugural Director of the Institute for Health Leadership in Western Australia, working with the Department of Health there. He has undertaken health reform and leadership development activities in a number of countries, including for NHS chief executives and medical leaders.
  • Professor Sir Liam Donaldson, Visiting Senior Fellow, was the government’s Chief Medical Officer from 1998 to 2010 and has recently been announced as World Health Organization  Envoy for Patient Safety, promoting this as a global public health priority. Sir Liam served as the Chairman of the World Alliance for Patient Safety. He currently holds a number of appointments including, Chancellor of Newcastle University, Chairman of the National Patient Safety Agency in England, and Chair in Health Policy at Imperial College London.
  • Dr Al Mulley is Director of the Dartmouth Center for Health Care Delivery Science at Dartmouth College and a Professor of Medicine at Dartmouth Medical School. His work uses decision theory and outcomes research to distinguish between warranted and unwarranted variations in clinical practice. 
  • Professor Richard Bohmer from Harvard Business School will work on leadership for improvement programmes, and with teams in local health systems. He graduated from the Auckland University School of Medicine and has practised hospital and primary medicine in New Zealand and England. 
  • Claire Perry OBE, Visiting Senior Fellow, is the Managing Director, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and an Adjunct Professor at Imperial College’s Business School. She is being seconded to The King’s Fund from October to work on a project on integrated care. Claire will maintain her links with Imperial College’s Business School during her secondment. Claire has been an NHS Chief Executive for almost 20 years and was awarded an OBE in 1998.
  • Dr Angela Coulter is a health care analyst and consultant. She has recently co-authored a report on shared decision-making to be published by The King’s Fund today. From 2000–08, she was Chief Executive of Picker Institute Europe, a UK-based research charity specialising in measuring and improving patients’ experience.
  • Professor Rudolf Klein is Emeritus Professor of Social Policy at the University of Bath, Visiting Professor at the London School of Economics and at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He writes on health care regulation, performance measurement, accountability, targets and evidence-based policy.
