Continuing Professional Development vital to delivering improvements in education says Minister

Education and Skills Minister Huw Lewis has told the next generation of Masters in Education Practice (MEP) hopefuls and mentors that strong Continuing Professional Development (CPD) of teachers in Wales is vital for delivering improvements in education in Wales.

The Masters is a unique programme for teachers working in Wales founded on the latest international research about the best ways to develop and support teachers. It links explicitly to the core priorities for education in Wales – literacy, numeracy and reducing the link between poverty and attainment.

Now in its second year, just under 1000 Newly Qualified Teachers are undertaking the Welsh Government’s MEP.

During the Minister’s speech Huw Lewis said that he will be focussing relentlessly on practitioners’ CPD - making sure that all practitioners in all schools across Wales are fully aware of the professional development opportunities that are available to them.

The Minister said:

"If we’re to deliver improvements in education in Wales we need strong, effective and long term CPD for our teachers.

"CPD is an entitlement for all practitioners without exception. Headteachers and senior school leaders must ensure that this entitlement is provided. All practitioners should be engaged in CPD to ensure that they support, deliver and lead high quality teaching and learning throughout their career;

"In the very best schools in Wales this is already happening with heads fully committed to the professional development of all of their staff. Professional dialogue, challenge, support, collaboration and development are the norm. This is nothing new, this is something that all schools and all practitioners in Wales could and should sign up to.

"There is excellent practice already out there in our schools. We need to harness this and work together so that we can continue to improve. It’s my belief that no school can call itself good unless it has effective provision for the professional development of its staff."
