Organisations join forces for sustainable development

One of the UK’s biggest construction firms will join Arriva Trains Wales and leading charities for talks with the Welsh Government on how to advance sustainable development in Wales yesterday.

Costain, the homeless charity Huggard,  Fareshare Cymru and Bridgend Further Education College have all signed up to the Welsh Government’s Sustainable Development Charter, which is  a voluntary commitment to put sustainable development at the heart of their operations.

They will be meeting Communities and Tackling Poverty Minister Jeff Cuthbert to see how they can continue to work together to make Wales a more sustainable and fairer place.

Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Later this year the Welsh Government will introduce its Future Generations Bill that will aim to ensure that organisations are working to hand over to the next generation a country that is measurably better in terms of environment, economy, quality of life and life chances.

Jeff Cuthbert said:

“It is our duty – from government, the public sector, private sector and society at large – to make sure we improve the lives of people now, while also leaving a better legacy for our children and grandchildren.

“We can only achieve this by working together. That is why it is so encouraging to see so many organisations have signed up to our Sustainable Development Charter.

“A key part of our approach will be the Future Generations Bill that I will be introducing to the Assembly later this year and which will complement the work of the Charter. The Bill will help tackle the generational challenges we face in a more joined up way, ensuring Welsh public services work together to achieve a more sustainable and fairer Wales. I want to make sure that we move Wales onto a more sustainable path.”

Other signatories of the Charter include leading business names such as BT, Tata Steel and Marks and Spencer, key public sector organisations including British Waterways and Cardiff University, and voluntary organisations like the National Trust and Keep Wales Tidy.
