School funding remains a top priority with £25 million boost for 21st Century Schools Programme
The funding secured from central reserves will allow work on a number of 21st Century School projects to begin earlier than planned and will also help to accelerate work on transitional projects already underway – enabling the Welsh Government to ease financial pressures in the 2014/15 financial year.
From the funding, £12.2 million will be allocated amongst the following projects:
- Ysgol Glan Clwyd, Denbighshire - £1,500,000
- Raglan Primary, Monmouthshire - £2,000,000
- Burlais Primary, Swansea - £2,500,000
- Lon Las Primary, Swansea - £1,000,000
- Gowerton Primary, Swansea - £1,000,000
- Gwernyfed Primary, Powys - £2,000,000
- Dafydd Llywyd Primary, Powys - £1,000,000
- Nant Talwg Welsh medium primary, Vale of Glamorgan – £1,200,000
The Welsh Government will now contact local authorities to ensure that each of these projects can begin at an earlier stage.
The remaining £12.8 million will be allocated amongst a number of transitional projects that are already in development.
In the meantime, discussions will follow with all local authorities to explore options to further accelerate the programme.
Welcoming the funding yesterday, Huw Lewis said:
“This additional £25 million funding will be welcome news to Local Authorities, schools and parents and shows that even in these difficult economic times we are continuing to prioritise investment to where it is most needed.
“By allocating this funding now, we’re allowing priority construction projects to begin much earlier than planned and also giving a much needed capital boost to projects that are already underway.
“This is essential, not only for our schools and communities, but for the continued support of our construction industry and the growth of our economy.”
Finance Minister, Jane Hutt said:
"Despite cuts to our capital Budgets imposed by the UK Government we continue to prioritise funding for the 21st Century Schools programme.
“We have always said that we will do all we can to boost capital in the face of budget reductions – because we know this is vital to support economic growth and create jobs.
"The £25 million additional investment will deliver real benefits for teachers and learners, help to create jobs for the construction industry and foster growth in the local and wider economy.”
