New recycling industry body and sector plan support Welsh economy
The Minister said:
“The vision of the Resource Association is one that the Welsh Government shares. We too want a resource-efficient material economy that realises value, recognises quality and seeks to maintain the integrity of the secondary materials that are too commonly treated as waste.
“The Association shows forward thinking with its vision and mission statement, which are closely aligned with the aims and objectives of Towards Zero Waste strategy.”
Association’s Chief Executive Ray Georgeson said:
“I am delighted that John Griffiths has been able to join us to launch the Resource Association in Wales, and especially alongside the launch of the Collections Infrastructure and Markets Sector (CIMS) Plan for Wales. This Plan sends an important signal to the waste and recycling industry, councils and wider business about the intention of the Welsh Government to be ambitious in their desire for Zero Waste and is warmly welcomed by ourselves and many in the recycling and reprocessing industries.”
Speaking at the event, the Minister outlined details of the Welsh Government’s Collections, Infrastructure and Markets Sector (CIMS) Plan. It outlines how the Welsh economy can best provide sustainable, high quality recyclate for local reprocessors of recycled material and manufacturers of products from recycled materials.
The CIMS Plan covers the collection and management of all waste material in Wales. It is aimed at those who collect and manage waste and recycling, and sets out how reprocessors, the waste industry, regulators, local authorities, the social economy and other bodies can play their part in the successful delivery of Wales’ recycling targets. The plan makes recommendations and offers advice on local authorities delivering the most effective, efficient and sustainable collection systems for recycling.
The actions in this plan will also bring about significant environmental improvements in Wales through the reduced use of landfill. The ultimate aim is to look to how we manage recycling not just now but in the future, and to turn high quality recycled waste into a valuable resource for Wales.
The Minister said:
“This plan requires the waste industry in Wales to turn itself into a resource management industry. My vision is that this industry will be recognised as world class in its ability to deliver a sustainable service which is respected the world over. I want Wales to be attractive to inward investment and, at the same time, be able to retain its home-grown industries on account of the high quality, sustainable, resource management services that will be on offer.”
