Minister launches recession advice guide

A new guide full of advice to help people and families deal with the impacts of the recession has been launched by Minister for Social Justice and Local Government, Dr Brian Gibbons, today (Wednesday 25 March).

The new guide called ‘Support when you need it’ gives a wide range of useful information of where people can get the help and support they may need.

The bilingual leaflet will be available online on the Welsh Assembly Government website at www.wales.gov.uk as part of the ‘Leading Wales Out of Recession’ campaign.  It will also be available in print shortly in local communities including at GP surgeries, Citizen’s Advice Bureaux and community centres.

The guide provides details of organisations offering support and other initiatives on money, work, health and well being, and, lifestyle.

Among other things it covers information about credit unions, benefits, the ReAct programme, mental health, free swimming and volunteering.

The Minister said:

The economic impacts of a recession on businesses are well known but behind the headlines the personal and social effects of an economic downturn can have profound impacts on people and their communities.

There is a lot of help available in Wales and this guide provides a wide range of information and help in one place whether it is about money, health, work or where people can take advantage of free facilities and activities.

We are doing everything we can to help people, businesses and communities weather the recession and prepare for the upturn when it comes.
