The search is on for young superheroes – can you help?

Our annual search for Britain’s real life young superheroes has begun and we’re relying on you to help us find them.

Nominations have opened for the 2010
Humanitarian Citizen Awards, which celebrate the valuable contribution young people make to the lives of others – so if you know anyone who deserves this recognition, make sure to let us know by Friday 23 July.

The awards recognise both individuals and groups aged under 25 who have done something extraordinary to help others. There are four categories: volunteering, first aid, fundraising, and community action.

Ordinary young people do extraordinary things

Robin Wells, British Red Cross youth development co-ordinator, said: "These awards recognise the amazing things that young people do to help others. They may not wear masks or a cape, but their selfless actions have a real impact and help to make the world a better place.

"In a time when there are often negative images of young people, we want to celebrate their ingenuity and generosity. The Red Cross Humanitarian Citizen Awards are a chance to reward these young people and give them the recognition they deserve."

Last year’s winners include Vikki George from Surrey, who set up a charity called Post Pals to send cards, gifts and letters to seriously ill children, and beat ambassadors, a group from Norwich who help other young people with eating disorders. There was even a nomination for a three-year-old girl who helps her mother who has epilepsy.

If you know someone who you think fits the bill then nominate them before Friday 23 July – it only takes a few moments and could really make someone’s day.

The awards ceremony will take place in November and a panel of young people, including winners from previous years, will judge the awards.
