YPLA - Public Accounts Committee Report on Academies Published

The Academies Programme report focuses on the performance of sponsored academies; how they have performed impressively to date, achieving rapid academic improvements and raising aspirations in some of the most deprived areas in the country. The report states that in many cases this has been achieved through high-quality leadership, a relentless focus on standards, and innovative approaches to learning and to the school timetable.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) report follows the National Audit Office (NAO) report published on 10th September 2010 and PAC hearing on 27th October at which Sir Ewan Harper and Lucy Heller gave evidence from the perspective of sponsors of academies. David Bell and Peter Houten gave evidence from the Department and Peter Lauener gave evidence on behalf of the Young People’s Learning Agency respectively.

YPLA Chief Executive Peter Lauener said in response to the report's publication:

“I welcome the findings of the Public Accounts Committee on the Academies Programme. The YPLA's role is to fund academies once they are up and running and to work with academies to promote the highest standards of financial assurance. We have a clear mandate from government to revise and simplify academies' financial control frameworks and this work is well under way, advised by a group of academies' finance directors. I am confident we will be able to put in place effective systems which will support the increasingly large number of Academies as they transform education opportunities in their local communities.”
