Opportunity to debate Education Wales (Wales) Bill welcomed by Huw Lewis

Education and Skills Minister Huw Lewis has welcomed the opportunity to debate the Education Wales (Wales) Bill in the National Assembly for Wales.

Introduced recently 01/07/13, the Bill builds on the School Standards and Organisation {Wales} Act 2013 by further strengthening and enhancing school standards, improving local accountability and reducing complexity and bureaucracy.

Key features of the Bill include:

  • The establishment of a new registration system and body to replace the General Teaching Council for Wales called the Education Workforce Council. This new body will require those who work in education from teachers to support workers to register with the reformed and renamed body to bring greater coherence for the wider education workforce.
  • The reform the process for registration and approval of independent schools in respect of learners with special educational needs (SEN). Providing for better transition for SEN learners from school into further education.
  • Harmonised school term dates to ensure better consistency across all maintained schools in Wales.
  • Removal of the appointment of HM Chief Inspector and HM Inspectors of education and training in Wales under section 19 of the Education Act 2005.

Huw Lewis said:

“We want to raise standards and performance in Wales across the board. Nothing is more important than making sure our children and young people have the best educational opportunities we can deliver.

“It’s for that reason I welcome bringing forward this important Bill.

“This Bill will make a significant impact on the education sector in Wales and I am delighted to commend it to the National Assembly for Wales today.”
