Investigation following death of man in Gillingham
The IPCC is independently investigating the actions of Kent police officers after a man died in Gillingham this afternoon, Monday 30 August 2010.
Staff at Medway Maritime Hospital called police at approximately 12.45pm to report a 52-year-old man, who was being held there under section 2 of Metal Health Act, missing.
Two police officers were dispatched to the man’s home address on Goudhurst Road, Gillingham. They arrived at approximately 1.30pm and found the man there.
At this stage it appears that, while officers were attempting to restrain the man, he became unwell.
An ambulance was called but the man was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.
The case was referred to the IPCC and a decision has been taken that the case will be independently investigated. IPCC investigators are currently at the scene gathering information.
