Recruitment drive for grassroots coaches
A drive to bring 10,000 new coaches into grassroots sport is benefiting young sports enthusiasts across England, with 2,400 coaches recruited in the six months since the programme went live.
Recruit into Coaching is being delivered by Sport England and the Youth Sport Trust as part of the Government’s PE and Sport Strategy for Young People.
High-quality coaching is one of the foundations of a world-leading community sport system. It plays a vital role, not only in encouraging participation and improving satisfaction, but also in identifying and nurturing talent.
Recruit into Coaching aims to unearth new coaching talent across the 70 most deprived areas of England, to support sporting activity by young people aged between five and 19. The three-year programme will see 5,680 coaches delivered through school sport partnerships, with 4,320 recruited and trained through the network of county sports partnerships.
The scheme is already making a difference to many people. Barbara White, a 50-year-old receptionist from Hartlepool, became involved with Recruit into Coaching after seeing an advert in her local newspaper.
She said:
“I’ve always been interested in sport, and completing the Community Sport Leadership Award has really improved my confidence in taking coaching sessions. Since then I’ve been coaching on a programme to get women to take up running and I’ve now registered for a level 1 tennis coaching course – again through Recruit into Coaching. It just shows it’s never too late to improve your skills.”
Mike Diaper, our Director of Children and Young People, said:
"Coaching, and great coaches, are critical to Sport England's drive to get more people playing and enjoying regular sport. Our work with the Youth Sport Trust to recruit 10,000 new coaches over the next three years will benefit many aspiring athletes and kick start coaching careers.”
