Power to the People toolkit

The Commission for Rural Communities was delighted to attend the launch last week of a new toolkit to help more communities set up community and parish councils to represent their interests and serve local people. The toolkit, ‘Power to the People’ (www.createacouncil.org.uk), was prepared by the National Association of Local Councils (NALC), which represents the 8,000 plus parish and town councils in England.

Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Eric Pickles MP also attended the launch and made clear his support for this the most local tier of local government.

Crispin Moor, Executive Director at the CRC, “I was delighted to represent the Commission for Rural Communities at this launch. Parish councils are a tried and tested model of community governance. There is value in extending this model further. The CRC is working with NALC and others to strengthen the parish sector. We are, for example, advising on a new National Training Strategy for parish councils and parish councillors”.

The Rural Advocate and CRC Chairman, Dr Stuart Burgess will be visiting Middlewich Town Council on 5/6 July to see examples of localism in action. Dr Burgess is also visiting Cllr Graham Leeke from Bishops Tachbrook , the winner of the CRC sponsored parish councillor of the year award to learn more about how local parish councillors are making a positive difference in their communities.
