Appointment and removal of a Chief Constable Press Statement From The Association Of Police And Crime Commissioners (APCC)

"The appointment and removal of a Chief Constable is not an operational policing matter.

PCCs have been elected by the public to hold Chief Constables and the force to account, effectively making the police answerable to the communities they serve.

The Police Reform and Social Responsibility Act 2011 specifically grants PCCs powers to appoint, suspend and remove Chief Constables. The Act also states that a PCC can call upon a Chief Constable to resign or retire."
