Community Payback - Have your say
Do you want to have a say on Community Payback punishments?
Community Payback is a punishment handed out by the courts as part of a community sentence. Offenders are made to carry out unpaid work such as removing graffiti, bringing derelict areas and buildings back into public use, clearing church yards, and unused allotments, repairing park benches and playground equipment.
Offenders must wear bright orange high-visibility jackets, marked 'Community Payback' while they're working. The jackets mean you can see that they're paying back for their crimes.
Community Payback is often used in conjunction with tagging, offender behaviour programmes and rehabilitation services; these community sentences can deliver robust punishments and useful services for society.
Last year:
- almost 9 million hours of free labour to benefit the community was carried by offenders sentenced to Community Payback
- almost 100,000 offenders were given Community Payback as part of their sentence, and
- over 67,000 people successfully completed Community Payback sentences.
