On Tuesday 26 March, a team from the Legacies of British Slave-ownership project at University College, London (UCL) will demonstrate their new database of British slave ownership in a free talk at The National Archives, Kew.

The database incorporates information from The National Archives' catalogue series T 71,  the registers of the Office for the Registry of Colonial Slaves. If you are interested in the importance of slave-ownership for your region, area, town or village in Britain; if your family has connections with the Caribbean; or if you are descended from enslaved people; this database could be useful to you.

Further study

The UCL team have embarked on a further study, Structure and Significance of British Caribbean Slave-ownership, 1763-1833. This will draw on a more extensive range of records held at The National Archives and elsewhere to trace the ownership history of 4,000 estates in the British Caribbean and to incorporate material on the lives of the enslaved people who worked on them. It is jointly funded by the ESRC and AHRC.
