Occupational therapists deliver integrated therapy services at the Trem-y-Mor Centre for Independence and Wellbeing.

The Health Minister visited the assessment centre, which was funded by the Welsh Government under the Integrating Community Equipment Services initiative.

The innovative services delivered by the occupational therapists at the centre are designed to meet Welsh Government strategic objectives and are focussed on keeping service users as independent and actively engaged in their communities for as long as possible and to prevent avoidable admissions to hospital.

The teams based at Trem-y-Mor are in the process of being fully integrated to form the Community Resource Team, in line with the recommendation contained in 'Setting the Direction', the Primary and Community Services Strategic Delivery Programme 

The Minister for Health and Social Services, Lesley Griffiths said:

“Occupational therapists work with people of all ages and in the whole health and social care sector, from schools and prisons to the NHS and Local Government housing and social services departments.

“They are a key group in facilitating the move to a more community/ primary care based health service. They enable services which prevent admission, effectively taking people out of hospital and maximising their independent living in the community.

“This centre is a shining example of integrated care, with the Local Authority working alongside the NHS to improve the patient experience and help alleviate the pressures on the health services in Wales.”

A spokesman for the occupational therapy team in Bridgend County Borough Council said:

“Bridgend has developed a comprehensive range of community based therapy led rehabilitation and enabling services.  

“Service User feedback had been very positive and we were delighted that the Minister was able to visit the staff based at Trem-Y-Mor and hear about their work.”
