IPCC update on information from police forces relating to Jimmy Savile

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has received responses from a number of forces we have written to asking them to review all relevant material and information to establish whether there are conduct matters that should be referred to us. These forces are West Yorkshire, Surrey, Sussex, Thames Valley, the Metropolitan and Lancashire police forces. We await a full response from Greater Manchester Police.

Following publication of the HMIC report earlier in the year we have also written to Cheshire Constabulary, and in the light of further information to North Yorkshire Police asking both forces to undertake the same review.

The IPCC has declined the recent referrals from West Yorkshire Police arising from their Savile report on the basis that they are not sufficiently detailed to satisfy the requirements for referrals of conduct matters under the Police Reform Act. We have asked West Yorkshire Police to consider these matters further.

A previous referral received in relation to the alleged actions of a former West Yorkshire police inspector has been accepted and is being assessed by the IPCC.

The only referral the IPCC has received at present is from West Yorkshire. All the information received is being assessed by the IPCC and we will make decisions as soon as we are able as to whether or not there are matters in relation to the conduct of individual officers that require an IPCC investigation.
