Local Areas receive funding to continue tackling anti-social behaviour and support parents
58 local areas will receive funding of £12.9m over the next 3 years in their effort to continue challenging anti-social behaviour and support young people Children's and young people's Minister Beverley Hughes announced today.
In addition 77 local areas will receive £11.7m over the next 3 years to fund parenting practitioners. The majority of parents do a good job, but a minority fail to set any boundaries and allow their children to drift into anti-social behaviour. These professionals will provide support to families involved in or at risk of anti-social behaviour.
The funding will help local authorities intervene early, support parents, prevent young people getting into trouble and help them fulfil their potential.
Antisocial behaviour levels are going down and as a result of the hard work by local authorities they have reduced perceptions of antisocial behaviour in 94% of local areas. Building on this success the Youth Taskforce is now asking local authorities:
* to tackle perceptions on parent's responsibility for their children's behaviour
* And tackle perceptions on whether young people treat each other with respect.
The Minister spoke today to representatives of 47 local authorities about how the new Youth Taskforce will take forward this work by putting even greater emphasise on promoting earlier intervention and more positive activities for young people.
Minister for Children and Young People Beverley Hughes speaking at the event said:
"The Youth Taskforce will balance the important job of challenging bad behaviour and intervening at its source, with a strong commitment to transforming the positive opportunities and activities available to all young people, and especially those at risk of becoming drawn into a cycle of problem behaviour.
"This is recognition that respect is a two-way street. We have to give young people themselves the respect, responsibility and opportunity to play a constructive role in communities, if we are to expect them to return the compliment."
NOTES TO EDITORS
1. The Youth Taskforce will build on the success of Respect and it will play a lead role in helping local youth support services to focus more on preventing teenagers from experiencing serious problems such as being drawn into youth crime and anti-social behaviour and disengaging from school. It will also help deliver the major expansion of positive activities and reform of services as set out in our ten year youth strategy - Aiming High for Young People.
2. The funding continues from £4.3m per year that targeted local areas currently receive through Local Area Agreements to help them deliver the Respect programme.
3. Local authorities will have the power to decide the most appropriate way to use the money to achieve the priorities agreed with the Government.
4. The £3.9m per year will provide continuation funding for 77 Respect parenting practitioners. It will be provided by grant funding and will be conditional on areas employing parenting practitioners to work with parents of young people at risk or involved in anti-social behaviour.
