NEC and LSN to join forces on distance learning

The National Extension College (NEC) based in Cambridge, which provides high quality distance learning for students across the country, will merge with LSN, it was announced recently. 'Heads of Terms' have been signed and it is expected that the merger will

The merger of the two not-for-profit organisations combines LSN's 25 years of education experience with the NEC's almost 50 year heritage in providing distance learning. It will preserve the legacy of Michael Young, NEC's founder and educational pioneer, by taking advantage of the most up-to-date approaches to learning provision. LSN has been at the forefront of the introduction of new, education-led approaches to blended and online learning.

The new organisation will retain the established and well-respected NEC brand. NEC is one of the largest providers of distance learning in the UK and, in partnership with LSN, will look to expand into new markets to take advantage of the increasing appetite for distance learning. Students from Cambridge, the East of England and beyond stand to benefit from access to an enhanced range of services as well as continuing with their current courses.

Commenting on the merger, Dr Ann Limb, Chair of Trustees of NEC, said:

"This is an exciting opportunity and a positive development for NEC. Our track record for supporting teaching and learning in the distance-learning field, will work in synergy with LSN's expertise in delivering innovative models for provision. We are united by a common purpose: to support learners and to bring more opportunities for access to education, particularly for disadvantaged students. This promises to be a powerful combination for our students both now and in the future."

John Stone, CEO of LSN, commented:

"As a charitable organisation our mission is to make learning work. That means supporting organisations on the front line to provide access to the best education and qualifications for all. We believe this partnership with NEC will give us an excellent opportunity to do just that."

"We're delighted to have been chosen by NEC as its preferred partner. Distance learning is set to become increasingly invaluable as a route into education for many people in this country and this merger will open many new opportunities for students and staff".
