Minister calls on supported housing sector to deliver more

The Housing and Regeneration Minister, Carl Sargeant, has urged the supported housing sector to work more collaboratively in order to provide vulnerable people in Wales with the services and support they need.

Speaking at the Cymorth Cymru conference in Cardiff, the Minister was keen to outline what Welsh Government legislation would mean for the sector and how he’d like to see it implemented.

The Minister said:

“During my time as Housing and Regeneration Minister, I’ve seen first hand the fantastic work carried out by many to provide support to some of the most vulnerable people in Wales.

“However, with the UK Government’s welfare reform hitting the most vulnerable hardest, the importance of working together to deliver services has never been more important. It’s vital that we continue to strive to deliver more for less, which means greater collaborative working within the sector as well as with local authorities, other public services and third sector organisations.

“The proposals in the Housing Bill will place a greater focus on early action to prevent or relieve homelessness. This will include a statutory requirement on local authorities to do more, sooner when faced with someone at risk of homeless, but they cannot do this alone. In order to make a difference, all sectors in Wales must work more collaboratively, with the common goal of putting the people of Wales and their needs first.”
