Minister praises effort to re-home victims of Ceredigion floods

Housing, Regeneration and Heritage Minister Huw Lewis has thanked all the organisations involved in the emergency re-homing of people who have had to leave their homes due to the floods in Ceredigion earlier this month.
The Minister made the comments after he visited Rheidol Place development in Aberystwyth run by Tai Ceredigion, which is being used to temporarily rehouse some of the affected residents. He also met with Mr Stephen Jones, whose mother's home in Talybont was flooded, on the day he was moving her belongings into her new temporary accommodation at Tai Ceredigion's Afallen Deg sheltered housing scheme in Bow Street.
122 families across Ceredigion and Gwynedd have been affected by the flooding, which also affected five commercial premises. The homelessness team at Ceredigion County Council has been working around the clock to assist those affected to find suitable temporary accommodation with assistance from housing associations and the private rented sector.
Mr Lewis said,
“Visiting Aberystwyth has really brought home not only the devastation left by the floods, but also the incredible spirit of the local people who have all pulled together to ensure those affected get all the help and support they need.
“From the initial emergency rescue operation to the clear up phase, and now the re-homing of people while their homes are made habitable again, the response, co-ordinated by Ceredigion County Council and involving several public, private and third sector organisations as well as the local communities, has been overwhelming.
“At a very traumatic time for those affected, the professionalism and dedication of the housing officers and the readiness of local housing associations like Tai Ceredigion to assist must have been a welcome comfort."
The Minister also added his support to the Council’s appeal for those affected by the flood. He said,
“To have lost as much as the flood victims have must be devastating, but for those who have inadequate or no insurance the loss is even greater. I am therefore pleased to add my support to the flood appeal and would urge anybody who can spare a few pounds to consider making a contribution to the fund.”
