NHS Confederation chair Sir Keith Pearson has been appointed as chair of Health Education England – the organisation that will provide national leadership to the new system of education and training in healthcare – when it is established in June 2012.

Sir Keith will take up his new role at Health Education England on 28 June 2012.  He will continue as chair of the NHS Confederation until he takes on his new position, and he will be attending this year’s annual conference and exhibition from 20 to 22 June.

Sir Keith Pearson said: “I am delighted to take on this new role, and proud of what the NHS Confederation has achieved during my time here. We have forged closer links with our members, improved the way we develop and deliver our services to provide increased value for money, and secured and strengthened our financial future. I know the NHS Confederation will build on these firm foundations to deliver exceptional support for members in the coming year.”

NHS Confederation chief executive Mike Farrar said: “Sir Keith’s new role forms a key part of the new health and social care system. He has been a great asset to the NHS Confederation, which has gone from strength to strength under his leadership. It is great to see him taking his expertise to Health Education England to ensure the future health workforce is equipped to deliver high quality care for patients and service users.”

NHS Confederation trustee Lisa Rodrigues said: “Sir Keith has been a truly outstanding Chair of the NHS Confederation. It is a tribute to him, and also to us, that he has been selected to lead a national statutory body of the importance and gravitas of Health Education England. The trustees of the NHS Confederation will now move swiftly to appoint Sir Keith’s successor, and we will keep our members closely informed throughout the process.”

Notes to Editors

1.    The NHS Confederation represents all organisations that commission and provide NHS services. It is the only membership body to bring together and speak on behalf of the whole of the NHS.  We help the NHS to guarantee high standards of care for patients and best value for taxpayers by representing our members and working together with our health and social care partners. We make sense of the whole health system, influence health policy and deliver industry-wide support functions for the NHS.
