On Sunday, 8 June, Olympian and South Yorkshire’s Active Travel Commissioner, Ed Clancy, took part in a family bike ride at Parkwood Springs, Sheffield, alongside CSSC and South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA).

Clancy’s visit forms part of CSSC’s ongoing mission to increase awareness of the benefits of participating in sport and physical activity across the country and encouraging public sector workers to be active and social outside of work by coming together to make lifelong memories alongside family and friends.

The Commissioner spent time with participants, discussing the importance of being more active, the benefits of walking, wheeling, and cycling, and the positive impact of physical activity on mental and physical health.

Speaking at the event, Ed Clancy said: “ "Getting out and active is about more than just movement - it’s about building confidence, creating connections, and building lifelong healthy habits. It’s been inspiring to see the dedication of our partners at CSSC and communities today, helping people to move more and move differently. From teaching children to ride a bike to supporting walking and wheeling, it's work that's making a real difference towards healthier, happier lives."

CSSC’s Active Wellbeing events are fully inclusive, encouraging everyone to increase their activity, whatever their mobility, ability, or location. Partners such as Places Leisure, Access Sport, British Orienteering and Bike Register provided attendees with bike maintenance, learn-to-ride, ride-confidence, as well as orienteering, equipping them with the skills and confidence to explore trails and routes.

Commenting on the CSSC Active Wellbeing family event, Matt Bazeley OBE, CSSC Chief Executive said: “At CSSC, we place a great emphasis on community and wellbeing, and this event was a unique opportunity to celebrate our members and the work we’re doing with the wider community.  We look forward to creating more opportunities for members to come together and reap the benefits of our enhanced offering.”

During his career that spanned 17 years, Ed Clancy won four Olympic medals, twelve UCI Track Cycling World Championships, seven European Track Championships and a medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games to become one of the most successful Team Pursuit cyclists in history.

The 40-year-old still plays an active role within the cycling community as South Yorkshire’s Active Travel Commissioner, working with partners to transform the region into a healthier, happier place by encouraging people to walk, wheel, and cycle more.
