NHS England has published the Integrated approach to identifying & assessing Carer health & wellbeing. Developed in collaboration with a wide range of partners and which forms part of NHS England’s ongoing Commitment to Carers. The ‘integrated approach’ provides a toolkit that clarifies the new duties on NHS organisations under the Care Act 2014 and the Children and Families Act 2014, provides a template Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to support joined up working locally, and includes numerous examples of positive practice of work that have proven successful in supporting carers and their families. Carers are twice as likely to suffer from ill health as non-carers. More than half of those who provide more substantial care have suffered physical ill health as a result of caring, and 70%+ of those caring round the clock have suffered mental ill health at some time. Taking an integrated approach to delivering support for carers allows the NHS to develop new models of delivering care and allows different services to work together & respond more flexibly to the needs of individual carers and their families. |

| With the focus on relationships in Mental Health Week, NHS England has put the spotlight on Sheffield where they are helping nurture relationships between adopters, foster carers and children to improve their adoption outcomes & mental health. Almost 50 adopted children have had a smoother transition to their new homes thanks to a fresh £85,000 scheme in Sheffield helping assess and support their mental health needs. |

The Patients Association has called for all Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG s) to implement NICE's 2015 Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) guidelines aimed at minimising the risk of antibiotic resistance (AMR) – a huge global health threat and one of the most significant threats to patients' safety in the UK. This comes after the results of a Freedom of Information (FOI) request from 144 CCGs in England by The Patients Association, reveal that:

The CMA has published an evaluation of the decision to break up BAA. Following an investigation completed in 2009, the Competition Commission (CC), one of the Competition and Markets Authority’s (CMA) predecessor bodies, ruled that BAA should be required to sell 3 of its airports to increase competition for the benefit of airlines & passengers.
Subsequently BAA sold Gatwick in 2009, followed by Edinburgh in 2012 and then Stansted in 2013. The CC also made a range of other recommendations including ones on reforming the regulatory regime for airports. The CMA’s detailed analysis, underpinned by an assessment by independent consultants, shows how the airports have responded to being under new & separate management. |

Efforts to reduce smoking are being undermined by millions of cheap, illegal cigarettes containing up to 500% higher levels of cancer-causing chemicals flooding the black market, warn councils. The Local Government Association (LGA) said recent council hauls have seen sniffer dogs used to trace bootlegged and counterfeit tobacco. Alongside the health risks, fake cigarettes also pose a greater fire risk as they do not include designs that ensure that a lit cigarette will self-extinguish if not actively smoked. This reduces the chances of them starting a fire if they are left burning in an ashtray, are dropped, or if the smoker falls asleep. They also cost the UK economy more than £2bn a year in unpaid duty. HMRC estimates that in 2013/14 10% of cigarettes consumed in the UK were illegal, & 39% of hand rolled tobacco was illicit. Anyone found selling counterfeit tobacco can face an unlimited fine or up to 10 years in prison. |

| With the EU referendum fast approaching, the Electoral Commission has sent an impartial booklet to 28m households across the UK recently. This comes as a recent Commission survey found that around 12% said they think they are able to register to vote right up to the day of the referendum on Thursday 23 June. Only 3% of people are spontaneously aware of the correct deadline and 74% either don’t know the date or believe it is later than 7 June. The booklet reminds voters that if they are not already registered to vote then they must do this by the deadline of Tuesday 7 June 2016. |

| From 13 June 2016, changes being made to internet security will affect access to Bacs via the Bactel-IP, and also the Payment Services Website. Organisations that use Bacs to pay salaries or to settle supplier invoices, must make sure their Bacs software solution and IT can support the new security measures – if they do not, they will not be able to log on to the system to make critical payments, including payroll. |
