Apprenticeships

Everyone is familiar with the word apprenticeships. Traditionally, an apprenticeship was the entry point for a young person in many skills based industries. Apprenticeships are now used by a wide variety of business to train new people in their organisations.

However, apprenticeships are probably now more known as a vehicle to obtain government funding for a training initiative. Apprenticeships are also being widely used to upskill existing staff and enable them to achieve nationally accredited qualifications.

Original apprenticeship Frameworks include a national certificate knowledge qualification (BTEC) and a national vocational qualification (NVQ) which are based on the National Occupational Standards.

New apprenticeship Standards are being developed to supersede the Frameworks. Groups of employers from all sectors of the economy are coming together to develop a new Standard to meet the Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours requirements for their organisations.

It is government policy that once a Standard is fully operational the equivalent SASE Apprenticeship Frameworks will not be funded.

Qualifications

Watertrain has been delivering the CABWI nationally accredited water related qualifications since 2007 and many hundreds of candidates have been successful in attaining their knowledge and / or competency qualifications.

Whilst we do some very bespoke training interventions for our clients, the vast majority of what we do is qualification based. Nationally accredited qualifications are also important to the individual as they are a valuable part of CPD and the benchmarking of their developing knowledge and experience.

In conjunction with CABWI, the water sector awarding body, Watertrain developed the Level 4 Diploma in Water Industry Operations and Management. This provides an excellent grounding for graduate entrants to the sector as well as an effective progression route for those individuals that may be in their first line management role and need to gain more knowledge and understanding at a higher and wider level. More information can be found on the Level 4 Water website or in the Level 4 Water brochure.

Watertrain has also now developed, again in conjunction with CABWI and wide consultation with employers, 5 new Level 3 combined qualifications. The evidence portfolio Watertrain has designed for each qualification can also be used to generate the competency and knowledge evidence to achieve the 70% required for End Point Assessment in the Water Process Technician Apprenticeship Standard.

The Level 4 is only currently available on a full cost commercial basis as are all the other qualifications if taken in isolation. The competency and knowledge qualifications can be combined in apprenticeship frameworks and, subject to eligibility, be funded through the employer levy. Whilst a qualification cannot be funded as part of an apprenticeship standard, the new Level 3 Diploma can be achieved on successful completion of the Watertrain evidence portfolio.
