About Us
Somali development services (SDS) is a community centre formed in 2001. incorporated in 2004 to support the Somali community, new arrivals, black, minority and ethnic (BAME) people to ensure that they are able to participate and thrive in Leicester city’s economic, social and community life. Since 2017 SDS has been operating as a community interest company (CIC).

We have a vision where new arrivals are respected, healthy, have choices and equal opportunities.
Our Mission
SDS was established to safeguard the well-being and human rights of Somali people and other new arrivals in Leicester city through education, advocacy, Information Advice and Guidance, empowerment and support.
Our Values
SDS’s values provide a framework within which it operates. SDS is a democratic organisation with a flat hierarchy that encourages participation from all the members.
SDS is a non-political, non-religious and non-profit organisation. It is free from discrimination on any basis.
The organisation is committed to understanding and meeting the development needs of the community by being responsible, effective, responsive, achievement-oriented, collaborative, respectable and respecting others, behaving with integrity, accessible, inclusive, honest and open.
Services
Health and Wellbeing Service: we support individuals facing mental health problems and actively work to raise community awareness of conditions like mental illness, cancer and dementia.
Education and skills:
- Supplementary Classes: we offer Math, English and Science support for primary and secondary school students.
- Community Support: we provide employment support and training, money advice, and ESOL and Maths literacy sessions for community members.
Training and Development: our available trainings include Anti-Racism, Children and Young People training, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Soft skills and Wellbeing.
Environmental Project: we recently launched our Leicester Environmental Action and Future (LEAF) project (we’re a member of a consortium), which focuses on educating, empowering, and teaching sustainability to community member in Leicester, Birmingham and Bristol.

Advice, Information & Guidance We provide the community with support catering to their needs. Our interpretation services include Somali, Hindi, Gujarati, and Italian languages, assisting individuals who may need it. Our experienced staff of advisors help hundreds of new and established members of our society and holistically guide them on a number of issues. Users of our AIG services come to our centre for a range of issues, including, but not limited to, housing, family support, financial advice, employment, healthcare and GP information and education and careers guidance. |

Community, Family and Youth Support Our team of expert advisors have tackled many issues in the community, including domestic violence, youth education and integration, knife crime and incidents of racism, xenophobia and racism. Aside from providing one-to-one support, guidance and training, we also hold events that highlight these concerns throughout the year. |
