Professional People with Experience

There is a growing awareness of the need to ensure that play facilities are operated safely and, with increasing volumes of equipment being delivered and installed every year, the market has a need for an independent and professional service.

The Play Inspection Company has been formed by four leading individuals in the play industry who have identified the need for a professional service covering all aspects of play. The objective of the company will be to provide high-quality service to all sectors of the play industry and provide clients with the information they require at the time they require it.

The company has three divisions:

  • outdoor play
  • indoor play
  • inflatables

The outdoor play division will provide post-installation and annual playground inspections, training for inspectors undertaking routine and operational inspections, risk assessments, accessibility assessments, playground design consultancy, BS EN 1176 and 1177 training and consultancy, safer surfacing testing and expert witness services.

The indoor (fully enclosed) play division of the company will provide safety inspections and safety audits to all operators of indoor play areas. The safety audit looks beyond the equipment provision to the management systems and procedures to ensure the safe operation of the play area. The indoor division will also provide guidance on risk assessment for indoor play, training and consultancy services and an expert witness service.

From 1 January 2005 every new inflatable delivered in the UK will require a Pertexa Inflatable Play Accreditation (PIPA) certification of conformity to the draft European standard (N496). Additionally, under the same scheme, every inflatable in use in the UK will require an independent annual inspection by an RPII-registered annual inspector (similar to an MOT certificate for a motor vehicle).

The scheme has been initiated by the inflatable manufacturing industry and is endorsed by the Health and Safety Executive. All inspectors involved in the inspection of inflatable play equipment will be registered with the RPII as demonstration of their competence. This division of the company will provide inspection services to this growth market.
