ABOUT US

We believe successful places don’t evolve by chance – they flourish as a result of logical movement networks, well-planned land use, and insight into how people interact with their environment. By translating sophisticated data into actions, we help shape places that support local economies, promote healthier lifestyles and create long-term value.

Towns and cities are complex, but it is possible to analyse them and reveal clear patterns underlying those that succeed and others that fail. Our approach ensures that every development decision is rooted in data-driven logic and empirical evidence, helping to build resilient, vibrant, and sustainable communities.

Origins

In 2010, ADAM Architecture discovered the power of urban network analysis being researched at the University of Strathclyde. Recognising its potential, a partnership was formed to commercialise the research, leading to the creation of PLACE LOGIC. Now an independent company, PLACE LOGIC is dedicated to creating walkable places that foster resilient communities and sustainable lifestyles.

SERVICES

PLACE LOGIC uses advanced digital spatial analysis to support strategic urban planning, enhance the quality of the place, and to create long-term value by unlocking the potential for higher sales premiums.

By combining rigorous spatial analysis with in-depth expertise in urban design and planning, PLACE LOGIC interprets data and helps explore alternative scenarios for more informed and sustainable decision-making. PLACE LOGIC measures street network connectivity, evaluate walkability – including pedestrian accessibility and place quality – and identifies character areas for design coding. These insights inform effective planning and development strategies.

Connectivity analysis

PLACE LOGIC uses digital analysis to identify the best-connected places in an urban network where businesses and shops are most likely to thrive.

Walkability analysis

Walkable neighbourhoods in an urban area are essential to encourage healthier, happier lives where everyday needs can be met in full. PLACE LOGIC spatial analysis considers both physical connectivity and the quality of the built environment to create a more sophisticated measure of the likelihood of people choosing to walk from one place to another. PLACE LOGIC’s harvesting and analysis of digital data that embraces both physical connectivity and the quality of the built environment is ground breaking and offers a powerful new tool to everyone with an interest in creating thriving new urban environments.

Identification of character areas

Identifying distinct parts of a settlement, often referred to as ‘character areas’, is a complex and time-consuming task that requires specialist expertise.

PLACE LOGIC applies an innovative methodology developed by the Urban Design Studies Unit at the University of Strathclyde to identify – through digital analysis – character areas in towns and cities using open-access data, looking at hundreds of characteristics of urban form at the building scale, applying pattern-recognition algorithms.

Consultancy

As well as geospatial services, PLACE LOGIC offers flexible consultancy services for clients with specific research or analytical needs. Drawing on our expertise in spatial analysis and urban studies, we can address a wide range of questions related to the built environment including, for example, socioeconomic patterns, housing markets and urban density.

Whether you need bespoke analysis, scenario testing or tailored insights, we can provide rigorous, data-driven solutions to support urban planning, improve the quality of developments and guide strategic decision-making.

SECTORS

PLACE LOGIC provides data-driven insight to support better decisions across planning, development and investment. Our tools help public and private sector clients create places that are more walkable and promote healthy and sustainable lifestyles, while being commercially successful.

We work across three key areas:

  • Strategic planning – supporting local authorities, government bodies, and planning consultants
  • Development – working with developers, landowners, architects, and urban designers
  • Value – providing insight to financial services, investors, and property professionals

Strategic Planning

We support the strategic growth of urban areas to improve health, boost local economies and nurture the natural environment. Our services help both policy makers and planners shape better places.

Guiding growth : Using sophisticated spatial modelling, we identify the most sustainable and well-connected sites for development – based on transport access, settlement patterns and local context. This helps local authorities streamline site selection and make informed decisions when integrating different emerging sites. It also helps authorities align growth with long-term goals.

Spatial frameworks and development briefs : We support the creation of strategic plans that guide development with clear principles. Our data ensures frameworks promote strong movement networks and sensible land use – so they’re not just visionary, but practical and deliverable.

Development management : We help assess the quality of planning proposals, especially in terms of walkability and access. Our analysis supports better decisions and higher design standards.

Design coding : We identify patterns in local character – such as building form, street layout, and density – using advanced spatial tools. This helps us to design codes which reflect the unique qualities of a place and guide appropriate development.

Development

We support developers and landowners at every stage of the process – from site selection to planning applications – with clear, evidence-based advice.

Strategic land acquisitions : We provide evidence at the earliest stage – helping identify high-potential sites and adding value during acquisition.

Site promotion : Our work supports planning applications by showing how schemes meet policy goals and enhance local areas – improving health, boosting business and creating more liveable places.

Design review : We work with design teams to improve masterplans, offering clear, data-backed advice to support better layouts and outcomes for people, place and planet.

Planning applications : We assess walkability, access to services, block structure and density, translating complex data into clear recommendations that strengthen the planning case and improve design quality.

Value

Well-connected, walkable places don’t just perform better for their occupants and users – they’re worth more financially. Our analysis helps investors, valuers and property platforms understand the commercial benefits of good urban design.

Investment and valuation : We help investors and valuers identify strong locations. Our insights feed into valuation models, making them more accurate and better suited to reflect long-term potential – supportive for acquisitions, financing and risk assessment.

Property search enhancement : Buyers care as much about the quality of a neighbourhood as the features of a property. Our data can enhance property search platforms with reliable, location-based insights that give users more confidence, and providers a competitive edge.
