Quality

BS EN ISO 9001:2008 is a process-based Standard, far removed from the initial (1979) BS 5750 which was procedure-based and extremely prescriptive.

ISO 9001:2008 has only 6 mandatory procedures (Control of Documents, Control of Records, Internal Audit, Control of Non-Conforming Product, Corrective Action and Preventive Action). As stated on the Home page, registration to ISO 9001 is often a pre-requisite for inclusion on many clients' Approved Suppliers Listings. However, it really ought to be more than just a 'Sales and Marketing badge' and ought, to attain maximum benefit,  to be part of the working fabric of the company and 'bought into' by all because 'it does make sense'.

The two 'drivers' of the Standard are Continual Improvement and Customer Satisfaction and, whilst not the 'only vehicle to hook up to', ISO 9001 does provide an excellent framework to achieve these aims.

Working closely with clients' personnel, a Quality Manual and Operating Procedures (the 6 mandatory ones plus others 'as required') would be complied, not just to meet with the requirements of each section of the Standard, but also to be in line with the detailed, specific requirements of individual companies

Registration is attained via a UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) approved Accreditation Body (and be 'recognised' by the use of the well-known 'Tick and Crown' logo to be used on letterheads etc.). Attendance at the initial assessments is included (Stage 1 for 'paperwork' and Stage 2 for 'practical matters') and, whilst no guarantee can be given that registration will be attained at the first audit, any NCRs will be cleared off at no additional cost.

Environmental

ISO 14001 was first issued in 1996 and was the first 'modern' Standard, becoming the model for other 'associated' Standards, mainly ISO 9001:2000 (now 2008) and OHSAS 18001:1999 (now BS OHSAS 18001:2007).

Its two main drivers are Prevention of Pollution and Compliance with Legal Requirements.

These ought to be part of every 'Company Policy' anyway, but registration to ISO 14001:2004 ensures and 'formalises' this to all current and potential Customers.

Indeed, in addition ISO 9001, registration to ISO 14001 is increasingly becoming a pre-requisite for clients' Approved Suppliers Listings as they, and 'passing down the line' to their Suppliers, wish to 'prove their green credentals'.

Also, most importantly, when companies identify their Environmental Aspects / Impacts and set Environmental Improvement Objectives, then opportunities for cost savings (often far greater than the cost of registration to ISO 14001) are identified.

Working closely with clients' personnel, an Environmental Manual and Operating Procedures would be complied, not just to meet with the requirements of each section of the Standard, but also to be in line with the detailed, specific requirements of individual companies.

Health and Safety

Health and Safety is (should be!) all about Risk Assessment / Risk Management. To meet with their legal requirements, all companies ought to have basic H&S arrangements (based on the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974) in place.

Registration to BS OHSAS 18001:2007 not only ensures this, but builds into 'best practice' and gives recognition of such to all current and potential customers.

Undertaken 'correctly' and having cognizance of the accepted terms 'suitable and sufficient' and 'as far as is reasonably possible' (it is 'permissable' to equate risk with cost), H&S arrangements ought not to 'constipate' a company's operations but to strive to ensure the safety and wellbeing of its workforce (often cited in company's 'Mission Statements' as its 'most valuable asset' but, sadly, often, in practice, not being at all the case)

Working closely with clients' personnel, a H&S Manual and Operating Procedures would be complied, not just to meet with the requirements of each section of the Standard, but also to be in line with the detailed, specific requirements of individual companies.
